Hi, I’ve just recently started to seek a spiritual life, and I just started mediating. I am having trouble though. I have never practiced this and neither has anyone in my family. I feel as though I get very close but then I get stuck. I feel vibrations in my body and then it quickly leaves. I almost stopped breathing after the vibrations left me the other day, and I’m not sure what the problem was. Any suggestions?
You almost stopped breathing? That doesn’t sound good. To me it sounds like there is an anxiety around your meditation practice. Meditation is very natural, long deep breathing through the nose is all very calm, serene, you are trying to clear your mind to the point of peace. I would practice working on long deep breathing and other breathing techniques. These techniques will help your meditation by helping your focus and tranquility. The vibrations are you simply feeling your energy body, there should be no harm involved in this state of mind only positive awareness of being, usually you can feel warm/cold and have a tingling vibrating sensation sometimes followed by visions of clarity and thought. It sounds to me like you are trying too hard, this is very natural. You want meditation to be as easy as breathing because meditation is something you can take with you anywhere you go. It’s all about observing the mind’s obstacles and thought patterns in totality.
As for Meditation, i always suggest the book, How to Meditate: A Practical Guide by Kathleen McDonald and Robina Courtin. It’s a very simple straightforward book on all the basics and questions of meditation with a bunch of exercises to help guide you as you start off.
